D.A.R.E consists of a 17 week curriculum in the 5th or 6th grade, a two week (10 lesson) curriculum in the 7th or 8th grade and visits in Kindergarten through 4th grade. The 5th grade lessons are designed to help the students further develop skills necessary to resist pressure to use illegal drugs and engage in violence. There are lessens in understanding the harmful effects of drugs, learning to consider consequences, the eight ways to say no, building self esteem, managing stress, combating media influences am making good decisions, positive alternates, positive role models and resisting group violence. The 7th grade lessons are designed to build on the skills developed in the 5th grade curriculum. There are lessons in resisting harmful influences, forming good friendships, resolving conflicts without violence and avoiding violent relationships. The visits to the lower grades are designed to promote safety in young children and build good relationships between the police and the children. There are lessons involving many safety issues from crosswalk safety to learning about the 911 system. This page has useful information for everyone, parents and child.
